The Pink Eye potato has a long history in South Arm, growing in Tasmania since 1900 and thriving in South Arm's sandy soil. Some say they love it so much here that they can be found growing in the sand-dunes!
Pink Eyes grown in the South Arm peninsula are said to taste better than those farmed elsewhere and so growers can be very protective of the truth of their origin; a local farmer even going so far as to investigate the misrepresentation of the South Arm Pink Eye brand with Consumer Affairs.
There are even some on the Peninsula who are so passionate about their potatoes that they have created harvesting machines particularly suited to the Pink Eye and their easily damaged skins.
And for the rest of us, colloquial place names such as Pinkeye Bend show just how highly regarded this humble spud is to those who live in the area.
