For many South Arm/Opossum Bay children Christmas will be forever associated with the sound of sirens blaring as Santa would somehow requisition the local fire truck and reward those who had been good during the year with a shower of chocolates and those who hadn't with a shower of water from the fire truck hoses.
Those who knew they didn't have a chance of receiving the chocolate version would arm themselves with water balloons and water pistols in order to ensure a fair fight. One year a carefully staged placement of cars on the road meant that Santa was hemmed in and had to fight for his life.
Those further away from the action in Blessington Street could hear the siren faintly in the distance and would wait with mounting excitement as it grew louder and louder. For some the anticipation would prove too much and as the fire truck finally drew up, they were nowhere to be seen.
