My South Arm

“In South Arm we measured so many hectares to the apple tree whereas down the Huon it was so many apple trees to the hectare.”

Joan Uzzell was born in Bristol in the UK and arrived in Australia in 1951 as a "Ten Pound Pom". She married George Griffiths of South Arm and with her husband managed apple orchards which spanned both sides of the road as you enter the township of South Arm.

"Winter was a busy season for us. We would make apple cases for the next season's crop. When the apples were ready they would be loaded into the cases and taken up to the wharves in Hobart. Trucks would line the wharves and freight ships would be sailing up and down the river. Our apples would be packed in consignment lots and sent to the UK. I always made sure that a box of our South Arm apples was delivered directly to my parents' house in Bristol."
